EPA Calls Greenhouse Gases a Public Threat
The US Environmental Protection Agency announced that greenhouse gases are a danger to public health and welfare in a decision that should eventually lead to new emissions regulations.
The so-called “endangerment finding” announced today by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is crucial in moving forward on new emission standards for cars, while potentially opening up large emitters such as power plants, crude-oil refineries and chemical plants to limits on their output of carbon dioxide and other gases.
“These long overdue findings cement 2009′s place in history as the year when the U.S. government began addressing the challenge of greenhouse-gas pollution and seizing the opportunity of clean-energy reform,” Ms. Jackson said in a statement.
Hopefully, this finding will encourage manufacturers to look for alternative ways of production, which will spur the growth of American leadership and ingenuity in the green revolution.
As the world’s population grows and develops, America can lead the way in a Green Revolution that can promise new jobs and a cleaner future.
There will be grumblings and lawsuits from giant industrial dinosaurs that do not want change. However, with this finding, laws will soon be on the books that will make transformation to greener production necessary and more immediate.
It is always easy to call for keeping the status quo, especially with the cry of economic hardships. But as business throws billions of dollars into new plants and equipment over the next decade or so, America can begin to hire new workers – a good start to the Green Revolution.
Real change takes this type of bold act by government, and American industry will surely be the beneficiary. Had the US automotive industry been forced to continue raising their mileage standards instead of a instigating a standards freeze brought on by business interests, America would now be the leader in smarter, more fuel-efficient automobiles, rather then watching the Japanese take a substantial lead. Now our manufacturing industry has a chance to get it right this time around.
Kudos to the EPA for finally recognizing that greenhouse gases are a health threat.
Here’s to a greener tomorrow…today.
